Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
127 AM PDT Mon Jul 14 2025
.KEY MESSAGES...
* Dangerous heat persists through Tuesday, with widespread
Moderate to Major HeatRisk across lower areas of western NV and
northeast CA.
* Higher (15-20%) chance for isolated thunderstorms this
afternoon, with isolated storm chances continuing each afternoon.
* Hot, dry conditions will marginally subside mid-late week with
typical southwest to west breezes.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
It`s another hot one out there today with highs in the low 100s
and upper 90s across the valleys. Sierra communities will see
highs in the low 90s again today. Overnight lows continue to be
rather warm, bringing little overnight relief, primarily for urban
areas. However, we start to cool down Tuesday as a low drops down
from the Canadian side of the Pacific NW, also bringing better
overnight heat relief. Expect afternoon highs in the mid 90s for
valleys and mid 80s for higher elevations though the end of this
week.
Thunderstorm chances increase today to a 15-20% chance. Best areas
will be in Mono and Mineral counties, potentially sneaking into
the Tahoe Basin, as well as far NE CA and N Washoe county. Threats
include lightning, brief heavy downpours, and erratic outflows.
Thunderstorm chances continue each afternoon this week, but range
from 5-15%.
Unfortunately, the haze will linger again today as fires continue
in and around the Great Basin and Desert Southwest. However, the
aforementioned low will bring increased afternoon breezes Tuesday,
helping to clear out some of the haze. As the week continues,
expect relatively warm and dry conditions.
&&
.AVIATION...
* VFR conditions persist with light winds and typical afternoon
W-SW wind gusts up to 20 kts. Expect a 15-20% chance of isolated
thunderstorms today between 21-03Z, primarily for KMMH and KTVL.
Primary storm concerns will be brief heavy rain, outflow gusts,
and localized turbulence.
* The hot temperatures may produce density altitude impacts,
especially for KTRK, KTVL, and KMMH. Slantwise visibility
reductions remain possible with smoke and haze from neraby wildfires.
